Cândva după ce a împlinit 3 luni, bebelușul meu a început să urle ca din gură de șarpe de fiecare dată când trebuia să plecăm cu mașina undeva. Nici nu îl așezam bine în scoică și începea plânsul, iar până la destinație nici că se oprea. Poate o secundă-două, să-și tragă sufletul și să mai ia o gură de aer ca să poată plânge în continuare, parcă și mai abitir.
Am spus plâns? Am spus urlet? Stați așa, că poate nu ne înțelegem.
Micuțul răcnea, oameni buni, răcnea din toți plămânii lui mici, țipa, hohotea, plângea cu disperare, cu muci și băluțe întinse pe toată moaca, tușea și se îneca, apoi urla din nou, se arcuia, se încovoia și hăulea încontinuu. Conduceam cu mintea vraiște, creierii terci și nervii plesniți, încercând să-l alin de la volan. Taică-su, lângă el, îi cânta, îl mângâia, îi vorbea calm, dar nimic nu funcționa. Ajungeam la destinație tremurând, cu urechile vâjâite, fără să mai fiu în stare să leg două cuvinte, cu lacrimi curgându-mi pe obraji. Începuse să-mi fie groază să mai plec singură cu el în mașină, iar în perioada aceea agitată care a durat cam o lună, o lună și un pic am anulat un drum la Cluj, la o nuntă unde voiam să mergem, pentru că nu ne vedeam conducând 6 ore într-un plânset continuu. A fost greu de dus, greu de tot.
În perioada aceea am citit tot ce era de citit pe subiect, am trimis emailuri la producătorul scoicii mele auto, mesaje disperate la mamele pe care le cunosc și am scris postări pline de ”PLS HELP!!” pe toate grupurile de suport pentru părinți care s-au inventat vreodată în România și posibil în sistemul nostru solar. Din fericire, am primit niște sfaturi foarte bune, care chiar au funcționat imediat și au transformat drumurile noastre din chin și disperare în experiențe liniștite, amuzante și chiar relaxante. Chiar și acum, la un an și 5 luni, ne ținem bine de aceste reguli, pentru că am văzut pe pielea noastră că dacă le ignorăm, nu e bine pentru niciuna dintre persoanele implicate.
Așa că scriu acest articol pentru toți părinții care au nevoie de ajutor, de idei, de niște sfaturi pentru un drum lin cu mașina alături de bebeluș. Nu este un text despre ce scoică sau scaun auto să vă cumpărați, sau despre rear facing versus front facing, deși aș putea scrie și despre asta niște zeci de pagini, ci despre ce să mai încercați când simțiți că ați încercat totul; când simțiți că nu mai vreți să mergeți în nicio vizită, vacanță sau weekend la bunici; când simtiți că vă vâjâie urechile și vă sar nervii pe pereți de la atâta plâns zguduitor al copilului.
Iată cele 10 reguli de care e bine să țineți mereu cont când mergeți în mașină cu bebelușul:
1. Citiți manualul de instrucțiuni al scoicii voastre auto și asigurați-vă că este bine instalată.
Iar dacă l-ați citit deja pe când erați gravide, undeva prin luna a opta, foarte frumos din partea voastră, nota 10 pentru geekyness, și eu am făcut la fel, dar urmați-mi vă rog sfatul și mai citiți-l odată, cu mintea de acum: e foarte posibil să vă dați seama de anumite reglaje de care ați uitat, anumite inserturi care ar trebui scoase (sau adăugate) sau de setări ale scoicii care sunt indispensabile pentru starea de bine a bebelușului vostru. Eu, de exemplu, uitasem complet că scoica noastră Maxi Cosi are centurile reglabile pe două trepte de înălțime și că din fabrică acestea vin plasate pe nivelul de jos, pentru nou-născuți. Centurile noatre puteau fi scoase prin partea din spate a scoicii (manualul de instrucțiuni explica asta foarte clar, pas cu pas și cu ilustrații) și apoi mutate/urcate la nivelul de sus, ceea ce brusc i-a făcut niște loc la umeri bebelușului, înlăturând presiunea pe care cel mai probabil, de când crescuse, începuse să o simtă. Din momentul în care am făcut schimbarea aceasta, brusc bebelușul parcă s-a relaxat, iar arcuielile și încovoielile au încetat. La 3 luni, era evident, deși nouă nu ne trecuse asta prin cap: flăcăul nu mai avea loc în scoica setată pentru un corp de nou-născut, pentru că nu mai avea un corp de nou-născut.
Așadar, mai citiți o dată manualul de instrucțiuni și întrebați-vă: ”Oare ar trebui să scot insertul pentru nou-născuți din scoică? Oare centurile se pot regla astfel încât să nu îi preseze umerii în mod nenatural? Oare scoica stă bine fixată pe bancheta din spate? Oare mai pot fi făcute reglaje de care nu știu/am uitat/la care nu m-am gândit?” – e posibil ca o mare parte din problema voastră să își găsească rezolvarea în manual.
2. Folosiți cu încredere Aerul Condiționat din mașină.
Bebelușii se supraîncălzesc foarte repede, treaba asta nu le convine deloc, așa că se pun pe plâns – ce modalitate mai bună pentru a-i atrage atenția mamei că ”hei, nu-mi place, mă încălzesc aici, am transpirat, m-am încins, AJUTOR!!!”. Spre deosebire de scaunul auto, scoica le ”îmbrățișează” mai mult corpul bebelușilor, așa că înțeleg de ce mulți dintre ei se simt într-o inconfortabilă îmbrățișare strânsă care îi încălzește și fleșcăie nespus. Dacă inițial, la începutul verii, nu dădeam drumul la aerul condiționat în mașină pentru că eram proaspeți părinți și speriați de bombe, după o discuție cu pediatrul lui Mircea am decis că mai important decât orice este confortul bebelușului nostru: dacă îi este cald, trebuie să facem să-i fie răcoare. Așa că am curățat filtrele mașinii, am închis geamurile, am pornit AC-ul, m-am asigurat că nicio gură de aerisire nu este îndreptată spre bebeluș (sincer, cam greu să fii în bătaia AC-ului când tu mergi în scoică rear-facing), și am setat temperatura la 18-20 de grade Celsius pentru fiecare drum cu mașina făcut vara. Pe răcoare, la o temperatură plăcută, bebelușul meu (scăpat de presiune centurilor puse prost de mă-sa) a început instant să adoarmă de cum ajungea în scoică, și dormea bine de tot – trebuia să îl trezim noi ca să facem pauzele recomandate de dezmorțire. Un mic exemplu – am fost recent la Moieciu, iar băiețelul a dormit 3 ore și 15 minute dintr-un drum de 3 ore și 20 de minute (fiind mai măricel deja, nu ni s-a mai părut necesar să oprim la fiecare oră, oră și jumătate pentru dezmorțire, așa că l-am lăsat să își facă somnul).
3. Îmbrăcați-l în haine subțiri, de calitate, în care să nu transpire și care să nu i se lipească apoi de spate.
Spre deosebire de scaun, scoica îl ține mai adânc băgat în ea, e mai cocoloșitoare, bebe se poate încălzi mai ușor ca în scaun, așa că i-am pus haine subțiri, salopete scurte din bumbac organic și atât – fără body-uri, pantaloni lungi, mâneci lungi, straturi și alte nebunii. Din iunie până prin octombrie, flăcăul a mers cu mașina îmbrăcat doar în salopete cu mâneci și picioare scurte, fără șosete, fără păturici, fără să comenteze în niciun fel. Am auzit că foarte bune ar fi hainele din mătase, bambus sau lână, dar noi nu prea am investit în așa ceva și am rămas la bumbac organic (Mircea are o haină groasă din lână fiartă pentru iarnă, cu glugă și fermoar, și o cagulă din lână fleece, tot pentru iarnă, ambele excelente, dar la asta se reduce garderoba noastră din lână).
Când a venit vremea rece am continuat să îl îmbrăcăm subțire, pentru că producătorii scoicilor și scaunelor auto recomandă ca bebelușul să nu aibă prea multe straturi, haine pufoase sau hanorace groase pe sub centuri. Așa că micuțul purta un body de bumbac cu mânecă lungă în mașină (poate maxim încă o bluză deasupra), pantaloni cu sau fără ștrampi și cam atât. De la apartament până la mașină îl drapam cu o păturică sau cu haina lui groasă de iarnă, iar apoi când ajungeam la destinație îl îmbrăcam gros, pentru vremea de afară – dar în mașină, hainele îi erau subțiri și confortabile. Așadar vă recomand cu toată încrederea să nu folosiți hăinuțe în care bebelușul poate transpira, rochițe din materiale incerte, cu nenumărate cusături și volănașe, polare pufoase, urși din aceia imenși sau haine groase de lână atunci când bebelușul stă în scoică.
4. Pe cât posibil, încercați să pregătiți dinainte temperatura interioară a mașinii.
Evident, dacă se poate și dacă sunteți doi, că dacă nu se poate și un singur părinte pornește la drum cu copilul, asta este, mi s-a întâmplat și mie de multe ori. Dar dacă se poate, ar fi de preferat să pregătiți dinainte temperatura interioară a mașinii – dacă este vară, mașina să fie deja răcorită bine, dacă este iarnă, să fie încălzită la temperatura care vi se pare vouă ideală. Mircea nu reacționa deloc bine dacă, în toiul verii, îl așezam în scoică și apoi porneam motorul mașinii (evident, îi era cald), așa că dacă eram singură în ecuație, recurgeam la tot felul de strategii ca să îi fac tranziția mai confortabilă cât se răcea mașina: parcam dinainte musai într-un loc umbros, foloseam parasolare, parcam cu ușa șoferului lângă trotuar, astfel încât când trebuia să pregătesc mașina de drum să pot pune scoica pe asfalt, pe trotuar, fix lângă ușa șoferului, și să pornesc motorul și AC-ul, apoi să stau afară cu bebe în scoică și să îl distrez până temperatura din mașină ajungea la o valoare acceptabilă. Iarna era mult mai simplu, mă asiguram că pun o pătură groasă peste bebe în scoică (deasupra centurilor, nu sub centuri), pe care o dădeam jos în câteva minute, când temperatura devenea confortabilă.
5. Porniți la drum cu bebelușul hrănit, jucat, schimbat și pupat.
Sună amuzant, dar adevărul este că, din experiență, ne-am dat seama că un bebeluș va adormi mai repede, mai mult și mai liniștit la drum dacă ne-am asigurat că toate nevoile lui de bază au fost îndeplinite. Nu plecăm niciodată la drum cu el înfometat, cu scutecul neschimbat, plictisit sau iritat, ci ne asigurăm ca a mâncat pe săturate, a fost proaspăt schimbat, spălat la fund și dat cu cremă (Weleda noastră cea de toate zilele), jucat, pupăcit, îmbrățișat, iubit. Apoi, când se apropia ora somnului, ne duceam la mașină cu el, îl puneam în scoică și porneam la drum, cu unul dintre părinți conducând mașina, și celălalt în spate, pe rol de șâșâitor, mângâietor de mânuțe și povestitor de povești adormitoare. Ideea noastră de bază: să excludem de pe listă cât mai multe probleme sau disconforturi pe care bebe le-ar putea avea la drum, tocmai pentru că, vezi punctul următor:
6. Porniți la drum când vine ora somnului bebelușului.
I cannot stress this enough, de fapt cred că ar fi trebuit să încep cu punctul acesta. După niște experiențe groaznice în mașină cu bebelușul din dotare, am renunțat la ambiția noastră de a pleca la drum dis de dimineață, pentru că ne-am dat seama că mai mult decât să ajungem devreme la destinație contează să ajungem cu creierii întregi. Așa că de pe la 3-4 luni, plecăm de acasă la drum lung DOAR când se apropie ora somnului lui Mirc. Când era mic, adormea cam la 90-100 de minute din momentul în care se trezea, așa că în ruptul capului nu ratam acele ferestre ideale pentru condus. Iar acum, că are un singur somn pe zi, undeva în jurul orei 12, asta este, pornim la drum la ora 12, dar măcar știm că 2-3 ore, poate chiar un pic mai mult, bebelușul doarme tun, iar noi putem conduce atent, repede și cu mintea concentrată pe șofat.
7. Folosiți accesorii ajutătoare: parasolare și oglinda pentru tetieră.
Știți și voi, când conduceți mai schimbați direcția, mai virați la stânga, la dreapta, poate porniți cu soarele în față și ajungeți cu el bătând din dreapta. Ne-am prins repede că somnul bebelușului se poate strica dacă o rază enervantă îi intră în ochi (mai ales dacă este mai micuț, acum la un an și aproape jumătate flăcăul nu mai are grețuri din ăstea). Așa că ne asiguram că aveam trasă copertina scoicii, am pus parasolare bune la geamurile din spate ale mașinii și am fixat o oglindă pe tetiera banchetei din spate, pentru ca în orice moment șoferul să-și poată vedea bebelușul și invers. Acestea au ajutat foarte mult și, sincer, este cam tot ce avem în spate în materie de accesorii. Acum că a mai crescut, ne gândim să punem pe bancheta din spate o protecție din aceea cu buzunare pentru jucării și cărți, dar ATENȚIE la acele accesorii care se vând peste tot și care sunt complet nerecomandate de producătorii de scoici și scaune auto, cum ar fi măsuțele pe care toddlerii le țin în poală ca să se joace sau să deseneze pe ele, sau bentițele acelea care să le susțină capul – înțeleg că nu sunt recomandate, pentru că în caz de accident pot lovi sau afecta bebelușul/toddlerul din scaun. Noi am decis să nu le folosim.
8. Faceți pregătirile de drum cât mai din timp.
Bebelușii ăștia au tendința de a absorbi foarte eficient stările adulților din jur, iar noi am observat că dacă ne stresam cu plecarea la drum, apoi stresat era și flăcăul. Așa că am hotărât să facem tot ce putem ca anxietatea să fie cât mai redusă (fără să bem la 9 dimineața, firește). Ce stătea în controlul nostru? Păi bagajul, bineînțeles! Iar regula noastră a devenit: dacă nu trebuie să cărăm noi, apoi luăm tot ce credem de cuviință că avem nevoie, dar mai ales, le aranjăm în mașină din timp. Ce vreau să spun este că, și aici mă adresez mai ales proaspetelor mămici, dacă simțiți că în primele excursii vreți să luați toată casa cu voi, mame dragi, PĂI LUAȚI TOATĂ CASA CU VOI, dacă tot cară mașina și dacă asta vă aduce un strop de liniște. Nu vă agitați că vecina de la 2 vă povestește cum a plecat ea cu bebelușul de 7 săptămâni în Thailanda doar un un rucsac și cu Girafa Sophie, chiar nu contează ce a făcut ea, dacă pe voi vă liniștește să plecați la drum cu salteaua de cocos a bebelușului și cu sterilizatorul, faceți FIX așa, ca să stați liniștite. O să vedeți că, în timp, pe măsură ce bebe crește și vă crește și vouă experiența, nu o să mai vreți să luați cu voi tot apartamentul și o să se reducă considerabil numărul genților din mașină. Până atunci, luați TOT CE CREDEȚI.
Dar da, după cum ziceam, asigurați-vă că aranjați totul în mașină din timp, eventual în ziua precedentă drumului, că un puzzle din 10 genți, rucsacuri, trollere, căruț, bebe-poang și scaunul Antilop nu se face chiar în 5 minute, e foarte agitant pentru părinți, iar agitația asta poate fi preluată și de cel mic și nununu, CLAR nu vrem asta. Noi am făcut fix această greșeală în excursia de săptămâna trecută la Moieciu, pentru că, vedeți voi, ne credem deja părinți cu experiență (ceea ce și suntem, un pic) și am considerat că vom termina repede bagajele dacă ne apucăm de ele dimineața. Bad idea people, ne-a luat mai mult decât credeam, am terminat totul obosiți, transpirați și cu un toddler iritat printre picioare noastre. Never again, ascultați ce zic, never again.
9. Pauze dese, entertainment de calitate.
Evident, câteodată poate bebe nu doarme foarte mult în mașină – sau poate că aveți de făcut un drum de 7 ore, iar bebe poate trage la aghioase 1-2-3 ore, dar cât să mai doarmă și el? Dacă vă pot da un singur sfat, acela ar fi: oferiți-i copilului entertainment de calitate, ca să își poată petrece cât mai mult timp în scoică sau scaunul auto fără să înceapă să se foiască sau plictisească. În funcție de vârsta lui, puteți să îi citiți, să îi cântați, să îi dați să lipească stickere, să deseneze, să picteze (cu apă, în cărți din acelea magice, ca să nu înșirați acuarele prin toată mașina). Pregătiți-vă dinainte cu un arsenal de cărticele, cărți senzoriale, jucării care îi plac, activități care știți că îl captivează, jucării de dentiție și așa mai departe. Noi am încercat să ne ținem departe de telefonul mobil, până acum am reușit, să vedem ce ne rezervă toddleria.
Evident, when everything fails, luați o pauză, va fi benefic pentru toată lumea. Câtă vreme bebelușul este mic, chiar sunt recomandate pauzele dese, la fiecare 45 de minute, o oră, o oră și jumătate (în funcție de vârsta lui). Iar dacă toddlerul este mai mare și chiar nu mai are răbdare să stea în scaun, faceți un popas, mâncați o gustare, faceți o plimbare pe câmp, orice numai să părăsiți mașina pentru o perioadă și să îi mai consumați din energie. Evident, drumul va dura mult mai mult, dar măcar veți ajunge la destinație în siguranță.
10. Calm. Calm. Calm. Respirați. Calm.
Când nimic din ce am scris mai sus nu mai funcționează, când bebe plânge ca din gură de șarpe și, dintr-un motiv sau altul, nici nu puteți opri (ni s-a întâmplat și nouă), tot ce vă pot spune este: rezistați; fiți calmi, pe cât se poate; respirați; trageți aer în piept; nu țipați la el, nu îl scuturați, nu îl certați, pentru că nu e vina lui că trebuie să stea blocat în scaun când e clar că nu își dorește asta; și, cel mai important, nu îl scoateți din scoică sau scaun în timpul mersului, este foarte periculos și o mică secundă de neatenție poate aduce mult rău. Fiți calmi, fiți blânzi, alinați-l, explicați-i iar și iar ce se întâmplă, că o să opriți repede, validați-i supărarea și furia, înțelegeți-l, și încercați mereu să priviți lucrurile nu din perspectiva părintelui obosit și iritat de plânsetul copilului, ci din cea a părintelui care își ține cumpătul și înțelege că plânsul este singurul mod prin care cel mic poate exprima că se simte supărat, neajutorat, lipsit de control și dornic de a primi înțelegere și ajutor. Știu cum e, în calitate de unic șofer al familiei, nimic nu mi se pare mai deconcentrant la volan, mai ales pe serpentine, decât plânsul necontrolabil al lui fii-miu din spate. Simt că îmbătrânesc 5 ani în 5 minute. Dar respir, respir, rabd, îi vorbesc calm și cu bunătate, opresc cât de curând se poate, iar când ajung la destinație (da, cu nervii plesniți), beau un pahar mare de vin ca să sărbătoresc că am ajuns cu bine, că suntem împreună, sănătoși și veseli, și că nimeni n-a urlat, n-a lovit, n-a scuturat sau n-a făcut alte lucruri pe care mai apoi să le regrete. I will certainly drink to that.
Sper să vă ajute toate aceste idei și vă doresc din tot sufletul drumuri line. Iar pentru părinții la început de drum, vă mai spun doar atât: de obicei, it gets better and better. De cele mai multe ori, drumurile sunt faine acum cu băiețelul, la un an și aproape jumătate. Iar când mergem doar noi la bunică-su sau prin oraș e chiar distractiv, eu cânt cu radioul, el mă imită din spate sau îmi arată în oglindă diverse imagini din cărțuliile lui, o strigă pe Sansa și pe taică-su, vorbește cu tetiera, cu mine și cu oamenii de afară – ce să mai, e bine. Va fi din ce în ce mai bine. Curaj!

Евгений Набойченко – ключевой свидетель обвинения в так называемом деле «Лайф-из-Гуд» – «Гермес» – кооператива «Бест Вей» и основателя «Лайф-из-Гуд»/«Бест Вей» Романа Василенко, которое рассматривается сейчас судьей Екатериной Богдановой в Приморском районном суде Санкт-Петербурга. Это бывший администратор российской платежной системы иностранной инвестиционной компании «Гермес». С выполненной им блокировки российского сегмента платежной системы компании «Гермес», а также с его (нетрезвых) сообщений в социальных сетях (сейчас все они им стерты) началась эскалация этого уголовного дела. Но, скорее всего, дело им же самим и его подельниками из питерской полиции и создано. Именно боясь того, что подоплека его поведения всплывет и вскроется то, как и кем действительно были украдены активы – Набойченко и его подельниками, Евгений отказывается являться в суд. Судья Богданова потребовала обеспечить привод. Набойченко же заявляет, что ему угрожают. И одновременно сам угрожает судом СМИ, которые упоминают его фамилию (угрозы, разумеется, пустые). Напомним, что собой представляет этот «герой». Вор, вымогатель, клеветник Прежде всего вор. Наши источники делятся информацией о хищении активов с кошельков клиентов «Гермеса», к которым Евгений Набойченко имел доступ. Набойченко не гнушался воровать даже у близких. Однажды остановившись у своей любовницы Светланы Н., Евгений избил ее и украл деньги с ее криптовалютного кошелька, пока она пыталась прийти в себя после побоев. Евгений Набойченко, по словам его бывшей жены, шантажировал Романа Василенко – требовал с него деньги: 170 тыс. евро. При этом, по утверждению Виктории Набойченко, угрожал увечьями и самому Роману Василенко, и его супруге, и детям. Похвалялся перед (тогда еще) женой своими матерными сообщениями с угрозами, которые он посылал Василенко и его близким. Кроме того, вымогал деньги у клиентов «Гермеса»: свидетельства такого рода нам предоставлены. Он допустил целый ряд клеветнических высказываний в адрес Романа Василенко – за которые против него заведено и расследуется уголовное дело. Наркоман, насильник, дебошир Деньги нужны Набойченко в том числе для того, чтобы «питать» свою наркотическую зависимость – с некоторых пор он предпочитает шлифовать водку галлюциногенными грибами, об увлечении которыми с упоением рассказывал даже в своих соцсетях. Он не всегда был алкоголиком и наркоманом – устроившись 10 лет назад в IT-службу, не пил и не употреблял. Но большие деньги, красивая жизнь, которая вдруг стала доступна для простого астраханского парня из низов, развратили его. Набойченко бил не только любовницу Светлану, но и жену, и детей. Дом своей семьи он буквально разгромил и вынес из него все имущество. Алименты не платит много лет. Завербованный органами Виктория Набойченко сообщает, что за три дня до обыска в их тогда еще совместном доме, Евгений уехал и ей сказал, что придут с обыском – но это пустая формальность. Так как он уже был в сговоре с полицией, так как за три дня был предупрежден об этом обыске. 15 февраля 2022 года Евгений Набойченко был задержан, но отправился не в СИЗО – куда отправили других сотрудников «Лайф-из-Гуд», не был помещен в изолятор или КПЗ, а жил на полицейской квартире. Он отказался от услуг адвокатов и на этой квартире, по свидетельству одного из полицейских, «бухал с операми». А также каждый день водил оперов по барам и ресторанам – угощал их за свой счет. В разговоре с женой он очень гордился покровительством начальника УЭБиПК питерского главка МВД (начальник сменился, и отношение к Набойченко ухудшилось). Наши источники считают, что он украл деньги клиентов «Гермеса», разделив их со своими друзьями из полиции. Вся его дальнейшая жизнь и привычки указывают на то, что он использует ворованные деньги. Не может молчать Набойченко в последние месяцы буквально взорвался сообщениями всем знакомым, а также в своих социальных сетях – которые он внезапно вновь завел. Вал сообщений и публикаций Набойченко – эмоциональная реакция на многочисленные статьи и видео о нем, в которых с доказательствами в руках рассказывалось, что именно он, многократно пойманный на воровстве пьяница, наркоман и насильник, разрушил работу платежной системы компании «Гермес» в России, украл деньги клиентов и разделил со своими подельниками из правоохранительных органов. Публикации последнего времени его явно задели, а алкогольно-наркотическое состояние не дает смолчать. В сообщениях он не скрывает чувств: утверждает, что всех «поставит раком»; что он может даже убить, если понадобится. И ему за это ничего не будет – потому что за ним стоит некий могущественный человек, покровительствующий ему, с которым у него общие интересы. The representative added that “given the nature of this early phase level,” Airbus preferred “not to further comment at this stage.”
The crux of Nunez Vicente’s Chaise Longue seat design is the removal of the overhead cabin to allow two levels of seats in a single aircraft cabin.
The idea is that travelers would have the option of booking the top row or the bottom row — and while the lower level might look less-than-appealing in photos, bottom passengers would be able to stretch out their legs and enjoy extra leg room. The top level is also designed to give “larger recline angles” and “leg-stretching possibility” than your average economy airplane seat, says Nunez Vicente.
Nunez Vicente initially developed the design for economy cabins before last year premiering a business class/first class iteration.
CNN Travel tested out early prototypes of both concepts and concluded that while the lower level has definite claustrophobia potential, the increased leg room could cancel out the potential cabin fever for some passengers.

Now, though, their favorite bogeyman, Gary Gensler, the Securities and Exchange Commission chief under President Joe Biden, is gone. Crypto cheerleaders have been installed throughout the government.
The SEC has dropped several enforcement cases against crypto companies and, starting Friday, is hosting a series of public roundtables “to discuss key areas of interest in the regulation of crypto assets.”
Under President Donald Trump, there’s virtually nothing stopping crypto companies from creating and selling their products.
At the same time, the same White House’s chaotic trade policy is undermining financial markets’ appetite for risk, leaving bitcoin in limbo, more than 20% off from its record high in January. And while the industry is grateful for all the attention, the White House’s embrace of some of crypto’s less savory aspects, like meme coins, has given serious investors pause.
Given the enormous potential for the $3 trillion industry in this moment, I checked in with Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University professor of international trade and the author of the 2021 book “The Future of Money,” about the forces disrupting financial technologies.
Fundamentally, Prasad brings a pragmatist’s view of crypto that is as refreshing as it is rare in a subject area that tends to attract zealots and loudmouths. We spoke over the phone shortly after the first-of-its-kind White House crypto summit earlier this month.
The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Nightcap: We just saw a pretty wild thing happen with the crypto summit — hard to imagine a scenario like that taking place under any previous administration. What were your takeaways?
Eswar Prasad: The crypto industry is kissing the ring, and I think it’s getting exactly what it wants from the Trump administration, which is the legitimacy provided by government oversight, coupled with what is almost certain to be quite light touch and non-inclusive regulation.
And I think we saw many of the major players in the crypto industry essentially using the opportunity to not just thank Trump, but try to make the point, which seemed to resonate with Trump, that this industry can power, in some sense, a resurgence of a certain part of the US economy.

These lifelike miniatures of iconic landmarks can be found on the Panorama — which, at 9,335 square feet, is the largest model of New York City, meticulously hand-built at a scale of 1:1,200. The sprawling model sits in its own room at the Queens Museum, where it was first installed in the 1960s, softly rotating between day and night lighting as visitors on glass walkways are given a bird’s eye view of all five boroughs of the city.
To mark the model’s 60th anniversary, which was celebrated last year, the museum has published a new book offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the Panorama was made. Original footage of the last major update to the model, completed in 1992, has also gone on show at the museum as part of a 12-minute video that features interviews with some of the renovators.
The Queens Museum’s assistant director of archives and collections, Lynn Maliszewski, who took CNN on a visit of the Panorama in early March, said she hopes the book and video will help to draw more visitors and attention to the copious amount of labor — over 100 full-time workers, from July 1961 to April 1964 — that went into building the model.
“Sometimes when I walk in here, I get goosebumps, because this is so representative of dreams and hopes and family and struggle and despair and excitement… every piece of the spectrum of human emotion is here (in New York) happening at the same time,” said Maliszewski. “It shows us things that you can’t get when you’re on the ground.”
Original purpose
The Panorama was originally built for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, then the largest international exhibition in the US, aimed at spotlighting the city’s innovation. The fair was overseen by Robert Moses, the influential and notorious urban planner whose highway projects displaced hundreds of thousands New Yorkers. When Moses commissioned the Panorama, which had parts that could be removed and redesigned to determine new traffic patterns and neighborhood designs, he saw an opportunity to use it as a city planning tool.
Originally built and revised with a margin of error under 1%, the model was updated multiple times before the 1990s, though it is now frozen in time. According to Maliszewski, it cost over $672,000 to make in 1964 ($6.8 million in today’s money) and nearly $2 million (about $4.5 million today) was spent when it was last revised in 1992.

In the rural town of Petersham, Massachusetts, 78-year-old Peter George keeps 1,000 fish in his basement.
“Baseball, sex, fish,” he says, listing his life’s great loves. “My single greatest attribute is that I am passionate about things. That sort of defines me.”
All of George’s fish are endangered Rift Lake cichlids: colorful, freshwater fish native to the Great Lakes of East Africa. Inside his 42 tanks, expertly squeezed into a single subterranean room, the fish shimmer under artificial lights, knowing nothing of the expansive waters in which their ancestors once swam, thousands of miles away.
Due to pollution, climate change and overfishing, freshwater fish are thought to be the second most endangered vertebrates in the world. In Lake Victoria, a giant lake shared between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, over a quarter of endemic species, including countless cichlids, are either critically endangered or extinct.
But for some species, there is still hope. A community of rare fish enthusiasts collect endangered species of freshwater fish from the lakes and springs of East Africa, Mexico and elsewhere, and preserve them in their personal fish tanks in the hope that they might one day be reintroduced in the wild.
“I’m a hard ass,” George says. “There is hope.”

George has been collecting fish since 1948 when, as a four-year-old in the Bronx, he would look after his grandmother’s rainbow fish. He soon developed “multiple tank syndrome” – a colloquial term used by fish collectors to denote the spiral commonly experienced after acquiring one’s first tank, which involves the sufferer buying many more tanks within a short space of time. He has not stopped collecting since.
Now, George sees himself as a conservationist; his tanks contain what is known as “insurance populations” – populations of endangered fish that are likely to go extinct in their natural habitats. He believes that when the time is right, they can be taken from his collection and returned to their homes. “I would never accept the fact that they couldn’t be reintroduced,” he says.

The first time Beverly Carriveau saw Bob Parsons, she felt like a “thunderbolt” passed between them.

Then, the server approached Beverly’s table.

The waiter was holding a bottle of white wine, indicating at the bar, which was packed with people.
As a rule, Beverly avoided accepting drinks from men in bars. She never felt especially comfortable with the power dynamic — plus, she had a long-term partner back in Canada.

И даже если учесть требования к нему со стороны лиц, признанных потерпевшими по уголовному делу, то нет никаких причин для блокирования работы кооператива: совокупный ущерб в обвинительном заключении – 282 млн рублей, притом что на счетах кооператива – более 4 млрд рублей. Эта сумма постоянно увеличивается, и еще 600 млн – дебиторская задолженность пайщиков кооперативу на сегодняшний день. 282 млн рублей могли быть заблокированы на счете кооператива, на котором аккумулируются средства из членских взносов, предназначенные для развития, – не было никаких причин блокировать всю деятельность кооператива! Утверждает, что финансирование покупки квартир старым пайщикам происходило за счет новых пайщиков: не понимает, что финансирование кооператива происходит не только за счет новых поступлений от пайщиков, но и за счет возвратных платежей за приобретенную на деньги кооператива недвижимость. А с осени 2021 года – времени внесения в предупредительный список ЦБ, почти исключительно за счет возвратных платежей от пайщиков, которым приобретена квартира. При этом ликвидность кооператива никак не пострадала. Объяснения со стороны адвокатов стали для этого экономиста откровением. Значительная часть пайщиков стремится ускорить погашение долга перед кооперативом, чтобы скорее получить квартиру в собственность – ведь квартира с помощью кооператива приобретается почти без переплат. Переплаты связаны только со вступительным и членскими взносами; налогами, которые платятся по тарифам для юридического лица; оплатой проверки юридической чистоты и независимой оценки недвижимости. С весны 2022 года кооператив прекратил прием новых пайщиков, при этом на его ликвидности это никак не сказалось: средства на счетах продолжали расти, несмотря на то что многие пайщики боялись платить на арестованные счета и вносят платежи только сейчас. Под руководством Сергея Ивановича Крючека удалось добиться в судах снятия ареста с квартир, а затем частичного снятия ареста со счетов, разрешения с арестованных сумм выплачивать по исполнительным листам пайщикам, которые через суд добились возврата средств (в этом им активно помогал сам кооператив), а также налоги и заработную плату сотрудникам кооператива. Частичное «освобождение» счетов позволило осуществлять выплаты пайщикам, принявшим решение о выходе из кооператива и возврате своих средств. Таких пайщиков около 2,5 тыс., общий объем выплат им – порядка 1,5 млрд рублей, значительная часть из них уже получила свои паевые средства – несмотря на огромные трудности с перечислением средств по 115-ФЗ: дело в том, что расследуется еще одно уголовное дело – по ст. 174 УК (хотя кооператив никаких денег за рубеж не переводил), открыто и новое дело по заявлениям потерпевших от «Гермеса», не попавшим в уголовное дело, которое сейчас рассматривается судом. Кроме того, идет гражданский процесс по иску прокуратуры, блокирующему возможность приема новых пайщиков. И, несмотря на эти трудности, кооператив, возглавлявшийся до недавнего времени Сергеем Крючеком, ежедневно осуществляет выплаты выходящим из него пайщикам и успешно восстанавливает деятельность. Важнейшее достижение Крючека – создание механизма, когда при арестованных счетах пайщики, которым уже приобретены объекты недвижимости, получили возможность погашать свой долг перед кооперативом и переоформлять недвижимость в собственность за счет средств других пайщиков, которые передают им свои арестованные паевые взносы, а взамен получают живые деньги от счастливых приобретателей квартир в собственность. Таким способом пайщикам удалось погасить долг перед кооперативом и полностью перевести недвижимость в собственность по десяткам объектов недвижимости. Кооператив под руководством Сергея Крючека работал над тем, чтобы вновь начать приобретать квартиры пайщикам, которые стоят в очереди на покупку первыми. Curiosity rover makes ‘arguably the most exciting organic detection to date on Mars’

The NASA Curiosity rover has detected the largest organic molecules found to date on Mars, opening a window into the red planet’s past. The newly detected compounds suggest complex organic chemistry may have occurred in the planet’s past — the kind necessary for the origin of life, according to new research.
The organic compounds, which include decane, undecane and dodecane, came to light after the rover analyzed a pulverized 3.7 billion-year-old rock sample using its onboard mini lab called SAM, short for Sample Analysis at Mars.
Scientists believe the long chains of molecules could be fragments of fatty acids, which are organic molecules that are chemical building blocks of life on Earth and help form cell membranes. But such compounds can also be formed without the presence of life, created when water interacts with minerals in hydrothermal vents.
The molecules cannot currently be confirmed as evidence of past life on the red planet, but they add to the growing list of compounds that robotic explorers have discovered on Mars in recent years. A study detailing the findings was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The detection of the fragile molecules also encourages astrobiologists that if any biosignatures, or past signs of life, ever existed on Mars, they are likely still detectable despite the harsh solar radiation that has bombarded the planet for tens of millions of years.
“Ancient life, if it happened on Mars, it would have released some complex and fragile molecules,” said lead study author Dr. Caroline Freissinet, research scientist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in the Laboratory for Atmospheres, Observations, and Space in Guyancourt, France. “And because now we know that Mars can preserve these complex and fragile molecules, it means that we could detect ancient life on Mars.”
A long time in the making
Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. More than 12 years later, the rover has driven over 21 miles (34 kilometers) to ascend Mount Sharp, which is within the crater. The feature’s many layers preserve millions of years of geological history on Mars, showing how it shifted from a wet to a dry environment.

Perhaps one of the most valuable samples Curiosity has gathered on its mission to understand whether Mars was ever habitable was collected in May 2013.
The rover drilled the Cumberland sample from an area within a crater called Yellowknife Bay, which resembled an ancient lake bed. The rocks from Yellowknife Bay so intrigued Curiosity’s science team that it had the rover drive in the opposite direction to collect samples from the area before heading to Mount Sharp.
Since collecting the Cumberland sample, Curiosity has used SAM to study it in a variety of ways, revealing that Yellowknife Bay was once the site of an ancient lake where clay minerals formed in water. The mudstone created an environment that could concentrate and preserve organic molecules and trapped them inside the fine grains of the sedimentary rock.
Freissinet helped lead a research team in 2015 that was able to identify organic molecules within the Cumberland sample.
The instrument detected an abundance of sulfur, which can be used to preserve organic molecules; nitrates, which are essential for plant and animal health on Earth; and methane composed of a type of carbon associated with biological processes on Earth.
“There is evidence that liquid water existed in Gale Crater for millions of years and probably much longer, which means there was enough time for life-forming chemistry to happen in these crater-lake environments on Mars,” said study coauthor Daniel Glavin, senior scientist for sample return at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, in a statement.
While the Cumberland sample may contain longer chains of fatty acids, SAM is not designed to detect them. But SAM’s ability to spot these larger molecules suggests it could detect similar chemical signatures of past life on Mars if they’re present, Williams said.

“Curiosity is not a life detection mission,” Freissinet said. “Curiosity is a habitability detection mission to know if all the conditions were right … for life to evolve. Having these results, it’s really at the edge of the capabilities of Curiosity, and it’s even maybe better than what we had expected from this mission.”
Before sending missions to Mars, scientists didn’t think organic molecules would be found on the red planet because of the intensity of radiation Mars has long endured, Glavin said.
Curiosity won’t return to Yellowknife Bay during its mission, but there are still pristine pieces of the Cumberland sample aboard. Next, the team wants to design a new experiment to see what it can detect. If the team can identify similar long-chain molecules, it would mark another step forward that might help researchers determine their origins, Freissinet said.
“That’s the most precious sample we have on board … waiting for us to run the perfect experiment on it,” she said. “It holds secrets, and we need to decipher the secrets.”
Briony Horgan, coinvestigator on the Perseverance rover mission and professor of planetary science at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, called the detection “a big win for the whole team.” Horgan was not involved the study.
“This detection really confirms our hopes that sediments laid down in ancient watery environments on Mars could preserve a treasure trove of organic molecules that can tell us about everything from prebiotic processes and pathways for the origin of life, to potential biosignatures from ancient organisms,” Horgan said.
Dr. Ben K.D. Pearce, assistant professor in Purdue’s department of Earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences and leader of the Laboratory for Origins and Astrobiology Research, called the findings “arguably the most exciting organic detection to date on Mars.” Pearce did not participate in the research.

Tesla may struggle to gain market share in oil-rich Saudi Arabia as EVs make up a little over 1% of all car sales in the country, according to a report by consultancy PwC published in September.
Tesla’s entry into the new market comes as the company fights battles on several fronts.
Last year, it recorded the first annual decline in sales in its history as a public company, posting a drop of 1%.
The company is facing intensifying competition in China, the world’s largest auto market. On Tuesday, BYD, a Chinese maker of electric and hybrid cars, reported $107 billion in annual sales for 2024, beating the near-$98 billion notched by Tesla.
And last week, BYD unveiled an ultra-fast charging system, which it said was capable of adding 250 miles (402 km) of range in just five minutes, easily outdoing Tesla’s charging technology. Tesla’s Superchargers take 15 minutes to charge an EV, providing a range of 200 miles.
Tesla has also suffered slumping sales in Europe. In February, the carmaker sold around 40% fewer vehicles on the continent compared with the same month in 2024, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

The highlight was being allowed into a space crammed full with shelves and vitrines holding all sorts of eclectic artifacts from swords to coins — with the odd car and carriage standing in the grounds.
It wasn’t necessarily the kind of museum you’d find elsewhere in the world, but it was definitely a sight that needed seeing.
Today, it has grown and now claims to be one of the world’s largest private museums. It holds over 30,000 items, including a fleet of traditional dhow sailboats, and countless carpets. There’s also an entire house that once stood in Damascus, Syria.
There are archaeological finds dating to the Jurassic age, ancient copies of the Quran, a section that details the importance of pearling within Qatar’s history, and jewelry dating to the 17th century.
There are also items from 2022’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar including replica trophies, balls used in the games, entry passes, football jerseys and even shelves full of slightly creepy dolls and children’s plush animals.
Some of the more disturbing exhibits include various items of Third Reich paraphernalia in the wartime room, and, strangely enough, several showcases of birds’ legs with marking rings on them. Basically, whatever you can think of, you have a very good chance of finding it here.
Rumor even has it that behind a locked door is a room filled with the late Princess Diana’s dresses and other memorabilia, accessible only to a select few visitors. Another door hides a room, no longer open to the public, filled with collectibles of the late Saddam Hussein.

Whether or not you’re actively searching for wellness advice, it’s nearly impossible to avoid hearing about the latest health craze making bold guarantees of transformation.
As you wonder if these claims hold any truth, you might also question why people often feel motivated to dive into intense challenges — when seemingly simple habits, such as getting enough sleep or eating more vegetables, often feel much harder to tackle.
Many of us are drawn to these extreme challenges because we’re craving radical change, hoping it will help prove something to ourselves or to others, experts say.
“We always see these kinds of challenges as opportunities for growth, particularly if we’re in a phase of our life where we’ve let ourselves go,” said Dr. Thomas Curran, associate professor of psychology at the London School of Economics and Political Science and an expert on perfectionism. “Maybe we feel that we need to be healthier, or we just had a breakup or (major) life event.”
With social media amplifying these movements, it’s easy to see why people are increasingly drawn to the idea of achieving the “perfect” version of themselves. But before jumping into a new wellness challenge, it’s important to take a moment, reflect on your goals, and consider where you’re starting from.

Greenland Prime Minister Mute B. Egede called the US delegation’s trip to the island “highly aggressive” in an interview with Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, and raised particular objection to Waltz’s visit.
“What is the national security adviser doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us,” Egede said. “His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission — and the pressure will increase.”
Trump claimed on Monday that people in Greenland have responded warmly to the US’s recent interest in the territory. “They’re calling us. We’re not calling them. And we were invited over there,” he said.
“We’re dealing with a lot of people from Greenland that would like to see something happen with respect to them being properly protected and properly taken care of,” Trump told reporters following a meeting with his Cabinet.
“I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future,” Trump added.
The president said he believes Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be traveling to Greenland too.
Trump’s idea to annex Greenland has thrown an international spotlight on the territory, which holds vast stores of rare earth minerals critical for high-tech industries, and has raised questions about the island’s future security as the US, Russia and China vie for influence in the Arctic. Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in the US taking the island by force or economic coercion, even as Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea.

“(This is) the closest we’ve come to detecting a major biomolecule-related signal — something potentially tied to membrane structure, which is a key feature of life,” Pearce said via email. “Organics on their own are intriguing, but not evidence of life. In contrast, biomolecules like membranes, amino acids, nucleotides, and sugars are central components of biology as we know it, and finding any of them would be groundbreaking (we haven’t yet).”

Both rovers have detected a variety of organic carbon molecules in different regions on Mars, suggesting that organic carbon is common on the red planet, Williams said.
While Curiosity and Perseverance have proven they can detect organic matter, their instruments can’t definitively determine all the answers about their origins, said Dr. Ashley Murphy, postdoctoral research scientist at the Planetary Science Institute. Murphy, who along with Williams previously studied organics identified by Perseverance, was not involved in the new research.
“To appropriately probe the biosignature question, these samples require high-resolution and high-sensitivity analyses in terrestrial labs, which can be facilitated by the return of these samples to Earth,” Murphy said.

Lightning is a dramatic display of electrical power, but it is also sporadic and unpredictable. Even on a volatile Earth billions of years ago, lightning may have been too infrequent to produce amino acids in quantities sufficient for life — a fact that has cast doubt on such theories in the past, Zare said.
Water spray, however, would have been more common than lightning. A more likely scenario is that mist-generated microlightning constantly zapped amino acids into existence from pools and puddles, where the molecules could accumulate and form more complex molecules, eventually leading to the evolution of life.
“Microdischarges between obviously charged water microdroplets make all the organic molecules observed previously in the Miller-Urey experiment,” Zare said. “We propose that this is a new mechanism for the prebiotic synthesis of molecules that constitute the building blocks of life.”
However, even with the new findings about microlightning, questions remain about life’s origins, he added. While some scientists support the notion of electrically charged beginnings for life’s earliest building blocks, an alternative abiogenesis hypothesis proposes that Earth’s first amino acids were cooked up around hydrothermal vents on the seafloor, produced by a combination of seawater, hydrogen-rich fluids and extreme pressure.
Researchers identified salt minerals in the Bennu samples that were deposited as a result of brine evaporation from the asteroid’s parent body. In particular, they found a number of sodium salts, such as the needles of hydrated sodium carbonate highlighted in purple in this false-colored image – salts that could easily have been compromised if the samples had been exposed to water in Earth’s atmosphere.

Yet another hypothesis suggests that organic molecules didn’t originate on Earth at all. Rather, they formed in space and were carried here by comets or fragments of asteroids, a process known as panspermia.
“We still don’t know the answer to this question,” Zare said. “But I think we’re closer to understanding something more about what could have happened.”
Though the details of life’s origins on Earth may never be fully explained, “this study provides another avenue for the formation of molecules crucial to the origin of life,” Williams said. “Water is a ubiquitous aspect of our world, giving rise to the moniker ‘Blue Marble’ to describe the Earth from space. Perhaps the falling of water, the most crucial element that sustains us, also played a greater role in the origin of life on Earth than we previously recognized.”

Scientists redid an experiment that showed how life on Earth could have started. They found a new possibility

In the 1931 movie “Frankenstein,” Dr. Henry Frankenstein howling his triumph was an electrifying moment in more ways than one. As massive bolts of lightning and energy crackled, Frankenstein’s monster stirred on a laboratory table, its corpse brought to life by the power of electricity.
Electrical energy may also have sparked the beginnings of life on Earth billions of years ago, though with a bit less scenery-chewing than that classic film scene.
Earth is around 4.5 billion years old, and the oldest direct fossil evidence of ancient life — stromatolites, or microscopic organisms preserved in layers known as microbial mats — is about 3.5 billion years old. However, some scientists suspect life originated even earlier, emerging from accumulated organic molecules in primitive bodies of water, a mixture sometimes referred to as primordial soup.
But where did that organic material come from in the first place? Researchers decades ago proposed that lightning caused chemical reactions in ancient Earth’s oceans and spontaneously produced the organic molecules.
Now, new research published March 14 in the journal Science Advances suggests that fizzes of barely visible “microlightning,” generated between charged droplets of water mist, could have been potent enough to cook up amino acids from inorganic material. Amino acids — organic molecules that combine to form proteins — are life’s most basic building blocks and would have been the first step toward the evolution of life.

To recreate a scenario that may have produced Earth’s first organic molecules, researchers built upon experiments from 1953 when American chemists Stanley Miller and Harold Urey concocted a gas mixture mimicking the atmosphere of ancient Earth. Miller and Urey combined ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), hydrogen (H2) and water, enclosed their “atmosphere” inside a glass sphere and jolted it with electricity, producing simple amino acids containing carbon and nitrogen. The Miller-Urey experiment, as it is now known, supported the scientific theory of abiogenesis: that life could emerge from nonliving molecules.
For the new study, scientists revisited the 1953 experiments but directed their attention toward electrical activity on a smaller scale, said senior study author Dr. Richard Zare, the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science and professor of chemistry at Stanford University in California. Zare and his colleagues looked at electricity exchange between charged water droplets measuring between 1 micron and 20 microns in diameter. (The width of a human hair is 100 microns.)
“The big droplets are positively charged. The little droplets are negatively charged,” Zare told CNN. “When droplets that have opposite charges are close together, electrons can jump from the negatively charged droplet to the positively charged droplet.”
The researchers mixed ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen in a glass bulb, then sprayed the gases with water mist, using a high-speed camera to capture faint flashes of microlightning in the vapor. When they examined the bulb’s contents, they found organic molecules with carbon-nitrogen bonds. These included the amino acid glycine and uracil, a nucleotide base in RNA.
“We discovered no new chemistry; we have actually reproduced all the chemistry that Miller and Urey did in 1953,” Zare said. Nor did the team discover new physics, he added — the experiments were based on known principles of electrostatics.
“What we have done, for the first time, is we have seen that little droplets, when they’re formed from water, actually emit light and get this spark,” Zare said. “That’s new. And that spark causes all types of chemical transformations.”

‘White Lotus’ villain Jon Gries reveals the true crimes that inspired his twisty take on Greg/Gary

When Season 3 of “The White Lotus” premiered last month, the shock was palpable when returning character Belinda recognized a familiar face at the resort in Thailand: Greg Hunt, the wily suitor of the late Tanya McQuoid.
As the season has unfolded, Greg (played by Jon Gries) has emerged as an antagonist, particularly after Belinda dove into the investigation surrounding Tanya’s death and learned that Greg, who now goes by Gary, evaded questioning by authorities.
On a show famous for reinventing itself, the same has been asked of the actor, who says that playing the ever-shifting character has been a welcome challenge and, like “White Lotus” itself, full of twists.
“In the beginning, I totally played him for a guy who was, you know, on his last legs,” Gries said in a recent interview with CNN, referencing Greg’s very apparent ill health in the first season of “White Lotus,” which premiered to rave reviews in summer 2021. He added: “When you play a character, you want to find his empathetic side, and you want to understand where they came from, and what got them to where they are.”
But when he was contacted by creator Mike White about appearing in Season 2, Gries realized he would have to adjust his framing of Greg, despite having previously imagined a “comprehensive history” for him on his own.
“(White) said, ‘I’m writing it right now, and I’m writing you, and I just need to know here and now: If you’re in, I’ll continue writing. If not, I’ll stop,’” Gries recalled.
Of course, he said yes to coming back to the series, which eventually required him to live in Italy for a few months for filming.

During production, White revealed to Gries that Greg is “very sinister.” That became rather irrefutable by the season’s climax, which saw Tanya’s demise orchestrated by her now-husband.
Come Season 3, Gries had to rewrite Greg’s backstory again, this time drawing from some unlikely sources for inspiration, like HBO docuseries “The Jinx,” about late convicted killer Robert Durst, and the case involving the man who came to be known as the Tinder Swindler.
Gries said he was struck by Durst’s “kind of seemingly even keel personality,” which served as a model for where Greg was headed, someone “who doesn’t really show a great deal of emotion, doesn’t seem to get too angry, just gets a little bit irritated and is dangerous.”
“There’s a bridled rage underneath. And those kind of people I find – at least with respect to Gary, Greg, Gary – fascinating,” he said.
And yet, while searching for an empathetic way back to portraying his character, Gries kept wondering if there was anything still redeeming about Greg.
An important “wake up moment” came during a decisive conversation he had with White just before filming in Thailand, in which the show’s creator said of Greg, in no uncertain terms: “He’s a psychopath.”
“And that was it. It was like, ‘back to the drawing board.’ And it really did help me,” Gries said.
The penultimate episode of the series will air on Sunday, an evening that thanks to “Lotus” and other shows has again become a night of appointment viewing amid a general move away from binge watching. Gries said he appreciates the shift.
“We’re a society that in a weird way doesn’t understand the beauty of waiting. The beauty of the space between the notes,” he shared. “If I binged (‘White Lotus’) I’d feel like I just ate too many chocolates. It just wouldn’t be the same. You need to process this.”

The race was almost entirely engineered for the high school student to break the fabled four-minute barrier – a feat first achieved by Roger Bannister more than 70 years ago – but the weight of running history was a burden that Ruthe seemed to bear lightly.
The first three laps, he later said in a video documenting the race, “felt pretty comfortable – nothing too crazy.”
Perhaps the most intimidating part of his achievement occurred when Ruthe returned to school the next day, only to be immediately called into the principal’s office.
“He’s like, ‘Alright, so you’re gonna have to go up on stage and we’ll get the whole school to clap you,’” Ruthe tells CNN Sports’ Patrick Snell. “It was really scary, actually. I headed into class and everyone thought I was famous.”

Ruthe is next due to compete in the 1,500 meters at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne on Saturday, and one target time to aim for will be his dad’s fastest time of 3:41.22 – three hundredths of a second faster than Ruthe’s current personal best.

The 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Ruthe adds, would be a nice target. And as for the Los Angeles Games in three years’ time? “I’d actually love to try and qualify for LA 28,” he says. “I feel like that’ll be a tough goal. But if I do that, I’ll be really happy.”
Already, Ruthe’s name is being mentioned in the same breath as Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the most successful middle-distance of this generation. It was his record as the youngest-ever four-minute miler that Ruthe took last week, and the New Zealander also beat Ingebrigtsen’s 1,500m record for a 15-year-old earlier this year.
Ingebrigtsen’s success, Ruthe says, has given him hope that he too can “have a good future” in the sport. But his biggest source of motivation comes not from the two-time Olympic champion, but from those closest to him – his training group led by coach Craig Kirkwood and athlete Sam Tanner.
